Gidelon or how to build a real medieval castle

This story began in Burgundy, in the east of France, in 1997, when two masters began to build a real medieval castle. And he is real, because all the work is carried out using methods and materials that were used in the 13th century. The construction of an amazing building continues to this day.

Perhaps this place is the only one in the world where construction is carried out using methods 800 years ago. Here you will not see any excavators, or tower cranes, or any other modern technology, everything is just like in the Middle Ages.

Such an unusual idea belongs to the French restaurateur Michel Guillot.

After the independent restoration of the castle of Saint-Fargo in the department of Yonne, which took 20 years, Michel wanted to try to build a medieval castle, as they say, from scratch and using the technologies of that time.

Guillot and his assistants hope that their project will help make the region more attractive to tourists.

The future castle will be called Gidelon. The building model was completely invented by its creators, who tried to rely on the architectural canons laid down by the French king Philip II Augustus in the 12-13th centuries.

By the standards of the past, the castle should have a deep, dry moat, two towers protecting the entrance, and one corner tower that is larger than the others in size, and loopholes are needed on the floors of each tower.

About 40 workers, as well as several hundred volunteers, participate in the construction of the castle.

The most difficult technology in the study of medieval masters was the technology of stone mining.

Tools at the construction site are also home-made. This, for example, homemade roulette.
